Big weekend in the cards at plus-size casino scene

Dozens of plus-size women and their admirers will gather in Tunica County on Friday for the seventh annual Big Beautiful Women Casino Weekend.

Organizer Mona Curtis said guests travel from across the Mid-South, Louisiana and Alabama to attend the annual event that celebrates living large with confidence.

"If you want to lose weight, then that's fine, but I don't think you'll ever be happy until you're comfortable in the skin you're in," said Curtis. "That's one of the reasons we do it -- to get people comfortable, not just to meet the opposite sex."

Curtis is working to get the word out about the emerging plus-size social scene in Memphis after reading an article in the newspaper about similar events in New York City.

She has helped organize a plus-size fashion show and discussion group and is finalizing arrangements for a size-14-and-up garage sale.

The activities provide outlets for those who feel intimidated in traditional social settings, she said.

"When you go to a regular club and you smile at a man, you don't know if plus-size or regular-size women are his preference. But when you come here, you know that he likes curvy women," Curtis said.

A regular at the casino weekend, Douglas Jamison remembers having a crush on full-figured icon Queen Latifah in elementary school.

The muscular 25-year-old fitness buff said the event is a time where people of all body types can unwind without feeling judged.

"We don't discriminate about age, race or especially size," he said.

Plus-size weekend

The Big Beautiful Women Casino Weekend kicks off Friday at 7 p.m. with a mojito mixer at Cottage Inn in Tunica Resorts, 4325 Casino Center Drive.

A shopping trip and dance party are planned for Saturday, and the weekend closes with Sunday brunch at Gold Strike Casino Resort.
